Our Family Mission: Guaranteed Healthy Plants, Delivered Fresh Daily.
Stuart Schechter was 13 the time his uncle told him about selling plants, and how rewarding it was. His uncle had a reputation for selling plants to all the major banks in New York during the 60s and 70s. The first branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank and Lincoln Center being one of his first accounts. Stuart, who always loved animals and nature, listened carefully. After he graduated from college with a degree in Plant Biology, decided to sell plants to the public.
His start was humble. He had plants on a pickup truck, and gave his friends beer money to look out for cops, who would arrest you for selling plants on the street. His spots were 57th street, selling to folks on their way home to Long Island, and Wall Street, to an assortment of wealth management and engineering firms. He would later rent out plants to production. Some of the more famous shows he provided plants for included Sex and the City, The Sopranos, Law & Order, and Sesame Street. If you saw Elmo moving through a jungle, those were his Areca Palms.
But his joy, which his sons clearly saw, was the education of the consumer. Value, value, value, he taught his sons. You have to give people value for their money. On the flip side, he also said, it’s not how you sell, it’s how you buy. That’s why his plants were so competitively priced. He developed special relationships with nurseries all over South Florida. His clients were able to get superior plants at box store pricing. A neat hat trick for a one man operation.
When his sons, Ian and Matthew, took over, they noticed a clear pivot happening to direct shipping. The problem, however, was obvious. Many of these big box stores that shipped plants had terrible packaging. Plants would arrive messy and broken. Plus, the quantity of plants being shipped meant it was easier to have plants contaminated with fungus gnats shipped as gifts.
100,000 successful shipments later, Mission plants has kept their promise of hassle free, healthy plants, delivered directly to homes nationwide. The guarantee is simple: the plant arrives healthy and happy.
Join the Mission Plants family. There’s always room for one more happy customer.
Sincerely,
Ian and Matthew
